Approaching Christmas, little raises the festive spirit more effectively than celebrating the season with song. In Oxford, perhaps the best way to do that is to head along to the perennial favourite that is Christmas at Christ Church.
Christ Church’s event isn’t a typical religious service: rather, it’s a celebration of words and music that focuses on capturing the flavour of Christmas. Expect classic readings and carols, but with a dash of humour and the occasional surprise.
And speaking of surprises, Christ Church always provides a high-profile guest to entertain the gathered crowd with a reading. Last year’s event featured Jeremy Irons, and Robert Hardy and Jean Marsh have also featured of recent times. This year Christ Church Choir promises that the speaker will provide a “suitably wizard experience” — but they’re offering no further clues beyond that.
Regardless of who stands to speak, you can expect to have a truly wonderful time at the event. Tickets don’t come cheap — a seat at the front of the North Transept costs £42 while an unsighted aisle seat is £10 — but you will be left eager for the approach of Christmas.
The event will run on Friday 14th and Thursday 20th December 2012 at 8pm. Tickets are still available.
