Oxford University Alumni Board

The Board consists of 20 volunteer members: the Chair who is appointed by the Chancellor, two internals appointed by Council, 14 members of the alumni community and three co-opted members. Terms are typically three years with an option to renew for another three. Co-opted members serve for one year with the option to renew.

Board meetings take place three times a year: September and May in Oxford and January in London.

Board Members

Nicholas SegalMr Nicholas Segal (Chair), St Peter's College

Nick is a barrister and member of Erskine Chambers (having previously been a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer). He is also a judge of the Grand Court in the Cayman Islands (assigned to the Financial Services Division).

Prior to joining Freshfields in 2006, he was a partner in Allen & Overy in London and Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York.

Nick has specialised in a wide variety of work in commercial and banking law, restructuring, insolvency (including bank resolution) and litigation (with much of his work, including his litigation practice, having an international dimension) and is dual qualified (England and New York).

He obtained a first class degree and now teaches in the Law Faculty at Oxford. He has written and lectured extensively. He is one of the consulting editors of Totty, Moss and Segal on Insolvency (Sweet & Maxwell) and a contributor to a number of leading textbooks. He is a fellow of the Society for Advanced Legal Studies and a trustee of the British and Irish Legal Information Institute. He is also on the editorial board of the International Insolvency Review, the Journal of Corporate Law Studies and Insolvency Intelligence. In addition to chairing Oxford’s Alumni Board, he is the chair of the UK Foundation for International Law.

Helen WrightDr Helen Wright (Deputy Chair), Lincoln College

Dr Wright is an experienced school leader, and in recent years has been Head of schools in both the UK and Australia, including Ascham School, Sydney, one of Australia’s leading independent schools, and St Mary’s School, Calne, Wiltshire, from where a girl gained entry to Oxford as early as 1921. Prior to this she taught at a number of schools, including St Edward’s, Oxford.

She was appointed to Heathfield, Ascot, first as Deputy Head and then, when she was just 30, as Headmistress which made her the youngest Head in the Girls’ Schools Association. She completed an MA in Applied Linguistics in 1998 and a Doctorate in Education on understanding moral leadership in schools, during her first year at St Mary’s, Calne.

She has been President of the GSA and Vice-Chair of the Independent Schools Council, and speaks regularly at national and international education conferences.

James DancerMr James Dancer, Keble College

James serves clients across various sectors as a consultant with Hakluyt & Company in the London office. Prior to Hakluyt, he was a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company, where his work centred on defence across public and private sectors, and on geostrategy. Before McKinsey, James was Chief Executive of a small partnership supporting clients on geopolitical topics, and was a diplomat with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. In the late 1990s, he advised major industrial groups on corporate finance strategy with UBS Warburg. James read PPE at Keble College, and is a member of the Campaign Board for Keble 2020. He launched a PPE alumni group in 2013, which now has over 2,000 members. James lives in London with his wife and two children.

Ms Emma Ahmad-Neale, Lady Margaret Hall

Emma read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Lady Margaret Hall, and is an active member of the Lady Margaret Hall Alumni Committee.  Since graduation, Emma has gained 18 years of experience in research management and evaluation consultancy. Emma has worked across the University, Public and Third Sector, focussing on poverty, social inclusion and community development, writing reports for organisations as diverse as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and J.P. Morgan. Emma recently moved into a role in client services within an asset management firm focussed on emerging markets.

Emma began her career at the University of East London, managing research and evaluation across a range of topics and initiatives within youth justice, children’s services and urban regeneration. She went on to work in innovation and research within a third sector think tank in east London, specialising in the informal economy, income poverty, and community inclusion.  Emma then joined a research partnership, working on a range of projects covering topics such as architectural inclusion, community engagement in the Olympics, housing and homelessness, the empowerment of marginalised women, holistic offender management, and engaging young people at risk of neither being in education or employment.  In her research practice, she specialised in service-user lead projects using creative digital methods, including documentary and film making.

Emma currently lives in North London with her two children.

Baroness Jay - Copyright House of LordsRt Hon Baroness Margaret Jay of Paddington (Mrs Margaret Adler), Somerville College

Margaret Jay’s career has combined experience at a senior level in Government public life, the media and business. She has also worked in the voluntary sector as founder director of The National Aids Trust and as a trustee and patron of several UK non government organisations and charities.

After graduating from Oxford in Politics, Philosophy and Economics she joined the BBC and began a twenty year career in broadcasting. She was primarily involved as a producer and journalist in news and current affairs, including as the first woman on screen correspondent for the flagship ‘Panorama’ programme. During this period she was a member of successive NHS health authorities in London and involved in local committees on health research and development.

In 1988 she was appointed as the first director of the National Aids Trust set up to monitor and develop care and information about this new threat to public health. Four years later she was appointed as a ‘working peer’ to the House of Lords by the Labour Party and held Opposition front bench posts during the 1990’s. At the same time she joined the Board of the London Broadcasting Company, and later of Carlton Television and Scottish Power. She was also on the Advisory Board of the Meteorological Office and chaired the Shopping Hours Reform Council which successfully lobbied to change the law on Sunday trading in 1994.

Following the Labour Party election victory in 1997 Margaret Jay was appointed to Tony Blair’s Government. She first became a Minister of State in the Department of Health, and the following year was appointed to the Cabinet as Leader of the House of Lords, Lord Privy Seal and Minister for Women. In 2001 she voluntarily stepped down from the Cabinet posts but remains active as a “back bench” Privy Councillor in the House of Lords.

Since 2001 she has extended her business interests as a non executive director of British Telecom and The Independent News and Media Company. She served as the senior independent director of INM – retired 2012. She has also acted as a political consultant, and as chair of the independent research organisation The Overseas Development Institute.

In 2007 she served as co chair of the Iraq Commission set up by the Foreign Policy Centre and Channel 4 Television to review the UK’s policy in Iraq.

In 2008 she served as a member of the Cross Party Commission on links between Local Government and the National Health Service.

In 2011 – 2014, she chaired the Select Committee on the Constitution, House of Lords. In 2014, she joined the Extradition Committee, House of Lords. In 2015, she joined the Communications Committee, House of Lords.

Her primary interests remain health, communications, international affairs and overseas development.

Jonathan BlackMr Jonathan Black, Director of Careers Service

Jonathan joined the University of Oxford Careers Service as Director in March 2008. He has led a transformation of the department to be one of the most innovative, transparent and engaged teams serving students, researchers, employers, alumni and academic colleagues. He publishes widely on how to innovate around the student/employer careers experience. Prior to this he held a number of senior commercial roles including:

  • Senior Associate at Booz & Co, the international management consulting firm
  • Senior Vice President, Finance & Operations at two international academic publishing companies
  • Co-founder and Director of an internet start-up successfully sold to Elsevier
  • Director of Strategy at Times Mirror, Los Angeles
  • Director of Corporate Affairs, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford

He has worked in California (for four years), London and Oxford; and across Europe when at Booz & Co. He is Chair of Minervation (an Oxford University spin-out company), and has been a Director of Modern Art Oxford and the Hackney Empire Theatre.

Jonathan is a Professorial Fellow of New College, Oxford, where he is the Tutor for Welfare and IT Fellow. He holds an Engineering Degree from Cambridge University and now lives in Oxford with his wife (a New College alumna and with a successful medical career).

Jonathan writes the regular ‘Dear Jonathan’ careers column in the Financial Times, and recent published the a successful careers book, ‘Where am I going and can I have a map?’

Dr Lennart Brand, St John’s College

Lennart is Managing Director of the Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin. The Institute – which is affiliated with Zeppelin University, a private German university near Lake Constance – is one of Germany’s foremost leadership-research institutions, collaborating with major players in business, politics, and civil society. Before his current position, Lennart held a variety of managerial responsibilities in academia, focusing on technology transfer, entrepreneurship, development, and international strategy. Lennart started his career in the industry before taking up his D.Phil. in Modern Languages at Oxford (St. John’s) in 2004. A few years ago he initiated the OUS Lake Constance chapter which covers a large area across Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Lennart lives in Überlingen, Germany, with his wife and daughter.

Nick BrownDr Nick Brown, Linacre College

Nick Brown is Principal of Linacre College where he was also a doctoral student from 1986-90. He is a plant ecologist with over twenty years’ experience in research, teaching and consultancy. His research has focussed on the impacts of major disturbance events on forests and the factors influencing their recovery. He has worked on logging impacts in Borneo and the Amazon and helped develop forest restoration and conservation strategies in the UK and the Caribbean. He is a Chairman trustee of the Tertiary Education Trust for Africa, a Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioner and a Trustee of the Sylva Foundation, a UK Charity set up to foster sustainable forest management. Nick chairs Oxford University’s Buildings and Estates Committee responsible for the construction, management and maintenance of university buildings and land.

Prof Angus Hawkins, Director of Public and International Programmes, Dept. for Continuing Education

Angus Hawkins is Professor of Modern British History, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of Keble College. His publications and research are on political and constitutional aspects of British politics in the 19th and 20th century. As Director of Public and International Programmes, in the Oxford Department for Continuing Education, he oversees alumni programmes held at Oxford for Stanford University, UC Berkeley, the University of Chicago, Duke University and other overseas institutions.

Miss Laura Hill, St Catherine’s College

Laura read History of Art at St Catherine's before establishing a career in External Affairs and Alumni Relations. She has worked in the private and higher education sectors, creating strategies and delivering campaigns to engage alumni across the globe. She currently works at the University of Liverpool Management School, facilitating mentoring support and professional development, in addition to developing networks in China.

She is a governor at Holly Lodge Girls College in Liverpool, and a volunteer at the Heritage Lottery Fund, advising on the development of youth projects for Curious Minds and English Heritage.

Laura has previously sat on the South and East Museums Federation Committee, acted as Regional Secretary for the Thames Valley Region of the Institute for Development Professionals in Education, and presented at the Chartered Association of Business Schools Professional Managers’ Annual Conference.

She lives in Manchester with her partner, also a Catz alumnus.

Mr James Khan, Kellogg College

James lives and breathes technology. He is passionate about software engineering, architecture, cyber security, digital transformation, and innovation. His expertise includes creating vision, strategy, and roadmaps for delivering business priorities. Over his twenty-three years’ career he has worked for several large organisations and start-ups, where his roles included Group Head of Information Security, Director of Software Engineering, and Head of Architecture.

Currently, James works for UBS Investment Bank as an Architecture Lead for Investment Research. Prior to UBS, he worked with AIB Bank as an Enterprise Architect and was responsible for the digital transformation of the Credit domain.

He read Software & Systems Security at Kellogg (2014). He is the President of Oxford10, the official London-based young alumni community of Oxford University. James lives in Central London with his wife.

Ms Maureen O'Neill, Director of Development, Faculty of Law

Educated at the University of Notre Dame with a BA in American Studies and Boston University with an MSc in Mass Communications, Maureen has worked in a variety of positions including a lecturer in humanities at Franklin Institute of Boston, a legal researcher on a state-wide legal needs study for the State of Massachusetts, and Director of Development at both Earthwatch , an organisation that funds scientific field research throughout the world, and The Royal Institution of Great Britain, home of British scientific discovery. 

As a freelance consultant, she continued to utilise skills developed in the areas of research, public relations, writing, publications design, computers, awards administration and management training. For the past fifteen years, she has been the Director of Development for the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford.

Jackie KingMrs Jacqueline Ranawake, St Peter's College

After reading Modern History, Jackie pursued a career in brand management, working at Chanel, L’Oreal and Estee Lauder Companies. Having spent two decades in the Cosmetics and Fragrance industry, she transitioned into Luxury Goods, and is currently the Marketing Director of Sotheby's Europe. Her expertise includes strategy, product development, online, customer relationship management and events.

A strong supporter of her college, she is also a volunteer on the Alumni Committee at St Peter’s.

Jackie considers London home, but spent half her life overseas in Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

Chris LoweMr Chris Lowe, Brasenose College

Chris Lowe read PPE at Brasenose from 1968 to 1972, and stayed on for a Cert Ed.

Instead of following a path to teaching, he found himself at the BBC as a graduate news trainee. He spent the next 37 years as a news reporter and presenter on radio and television. As a reporter, he spent many months reporting on the Troubles in Northern Ireland and, as a presenter, he worked on most of the main news programmes of the day, including Today and PM on Radio 4 and Newsnight, the 6 O’clock News  and the BBC News Channel.

He is now, amongst other things, a governor of Haileybury College, a board member of Middlesex County Cricket Club and a magistrate.

His Oxford connections go back to his five years at the Dragon School and he has kept in close touch with both the Dragon and BNC ever since. At BNC, he has organised reunions for friends who shared the same staircase as freshmen, and states: 'I remain enormously proud to have been an Oxford undergraduate and to be able share that pride and passion with alumni more widely.'

Mr Kwabena Osei-Boateng, Mansfield College

Kwabena is the Managing Director of IC Securities Holdings Limited, an Africa-focused investment banking and securities dealing firm. He has several years’ experience in investment banking and management consulting across several geographic markets. Across Africa, Kwabena has advised several companies in various countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Congo and South Africa. Prior to re-joining IC Securities Kwabena worked as a Management Consultant at McKinsey & Company. Before that, Kwabena worked for JP Morgan and then for LongAcre Partners (now a part of Jefferies & Company). Kwabena is also the Chairman of IC Asset Managers (Ghana) Limited, one of Ghana’s largest pension fund managers. He holds an MEng (Hons) degree in Engineering, Economics, and Management from the University of Oxford, where he received a scholarship for academic excellence, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School, where he received first-year honours. Kwabena is also a Fellow of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Fellowship Programme.

CPluchinoMs Corinne Pluchino, Christ Church

After reading PPE at Christ Church, Corinne began her career in the Houses of Parliament and local government before moving into the commercial sector.  She advised organisations on their communications and external affairs strategies, including as a Director at Hill & Knowlton, the global communications agency.  Her clients included several charitable bodies that ultimately inspired her to move to the third sector full-time, first at Marie Curie and then at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, where she was Executive Director for Marketing, Communications and Fundraising.

Corinne has a lifelong interest in the natural world and in 2017 she returned to full-time education as a postgraduate to study for an MSc in Environment, Politics and Society at UCL. She is now Chief Executive of the Campaign for National Parks, which is dedicated to protecting, improving and promoting the National Parks of England and Wales.  Corinne has retained close links with Christ Church since graduation and is also a Trustee of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

Amanda PullingerMs Amanda Pullinger, Brasenose College

Amanda Pullinger is the Chief Executive Officer of 100 Women in Finance (previously 100 Women in Hedge Funds). She was promoted to this position on 1 January 2014. Previously, she consulted as Executive Director for six years. She leads a small staff team and manages over 350 volunteer practitioners globally, overseeing the operations of the organization, which now has over 15,000 members in 21 locations.

Amanda set up Pullinger Management in 2006 to provide strategic management primarily to not for profit organizations. In addition to consulting to 100 Women in Hedge Funds (now 100 Women in Finance), Amanda also consulted to the American Red Cross of Greater New York, where she co-founded and managed the Centennial Circle, a women’s leadership group focused on building support and necessary funds for preparedness training and volunteering in at- risk neighborhoods in New York. She also worked with Brasenose College, Oxford on their 500th Anniversary celebrations and ongoing alumni initiatives.

From 2000-2006, Amanda was a principal at Aquamarine Capital Management, where she was responsible for managing marketing, investor relations and back office administration for two private investment funds.

Previously, she was a Director of Marketing and Business Development for a number of companies in a number of business sectors including environmental services, advertising/PR and market research, construction equipment marketing, and hardware and software services. From 1999-2000, she worked for LivePerson, a dotcom startup; 1997-1999, she worked for Unisys Corporation; 1995-1999, she worked for Giles & Ransome, a Caterpillar dealership; 1991-1995 she worked for the Lefton Company, a Philadelphia based advertising and PR company. She came to the US in 1989 to work for a subsidiary of Cory Environmental, a UK based environmental services company for whom she had worked for two years in London.

Amanda is currently Chairman of The HALO Trust (www.halotrust.org), a $65million UK/US charity. She previously served on the Boards of the NYU Cancer Institute, SkillForce, and Girls’ Prep, and was on the founding Board of 100 Women in Hedge Funds (now 100 Women in Finance), serving as its President for two years. She is a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Amanda graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1987 with an Honours Degree in Modern History. She earned an MBA from La Salle University, Philadelphia, in 1998, and received the Academic Award for MBA student of the year as well as the Beta Gamma Sigma designation.

Mrs Paula Skokowski, St Edmund Hall

Paula Skokowski has spent her career at the very forefront of technology, building companies from zero to late-stage growth in Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), Voice Recognition, Mobile, and most recently Information Security. She has held executive leadership roles at a series of venture-backed companies, and currently is Chief Marketing Officer for Yubico.

Paula grew up in England, attending Chatham Grammar School for Girls, and was one of the first two women engineers to study at St Edmund Hall. After graduation she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to begin her career and went on to study at UC Berkeley, receiving an MS in Engineering, specializing in Robotics.

Paula is an active member of the Oxford entrepreneurial community in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is co-founder and fund manager of the Oxford Angel Fund, that invests in companies founded by Oxford entrepreneurs, providing seed funding and mentoring to assist entrepreneurs in growing their businesses.

Ms Judith Tew, Lady Margaret Hall

Having graduated in Mathematics from Lady Margaret Hall, Judith has gained broad financial and commercial experience in a variety of leadership roles.

She qualified as an accountant with Price Waterhouse (now PwC) in London and subsequently pursued a career in Finance with HSBC where she was Chief Accountant and subsequently Financial Controller for HSBC UK. She then spent over 15 years working in the insurance industry, working at AXA PPP healthcare where she was Risk and Compliance Director and more recently the Strategic Development and Change Director. In the latter role Judith was responsible for designing and leading change programmes and corporate acquisition and disposal activity for the business. In addition to her commercial roles at AXA, Judith was mentor to the graduates on the AXA PPP graduate scheme.

Judith has interests in music, theatre and in education and is a governor of a local grammar school and a director of a local theatre. Judith lives in Kent with her husband and they have two grown-up children.

Alumni Board Standing Orders

Alumni Board Standing Orders

Purpose: The Society’s purpose is as set out in University Regulations:

“The Oxford University Society (“the Society”) shall be an organisation within the University under Council for bringing together alumni of the University and encouraging and co-ordinating their support for the collegiate University, other than that concerned with fundraising. It serves as the focus for alumni relations and activities on behalf of the University.”

These orders were updated, 16 January 2018.

1.  The Oxford University Alumni Board. The composition and purpose of the Board are set out in University Regulations. The Chancellor may attend any of its meetings.

2.  Appointments to the Board. In accordance with Regulations, in addition to its powers to co-opt one member, the Board may appoint fourteen members in two categories:

a.  up to nine members of the alumni community, appointed by the Board;

b.  no fewer than five self-nominated members of the alumni community. The procedure for such appointments shall be as follows:

i.  Nominations shall be invited through the monthly electronic newsletter, the Alumni Website, via alumni groups, and through any other means deemed appropriate by the Board.

ii.  Self-nominations must be seconded by someone other than the candidate. They must be submitted on an official nomination form to be downloaded from the alumni website or obtained by writing to the Director of Alumni Relations. Nominated candidates shall submit a supporting statement of no more than 200 words.

iii.  The Board’s Nominations Committee shall review all nominations and make recommendations to the Board based on the nominees’ skills and levels of involvement. The Board shall then appoint the most appropriate nominees, taking account of their levels of involvement with the alumni community and the needs of the Board.

3.  Sub-Committees. The Chair may constitute sub-committees to assist in the management of Board business. Decisions by such sub committees shall be subject to ratification by the full Board.

4.  Events and Services. Events and services organised for alumni shall normally be arranged and provided by the University Alumni Office, with guidance and, where appropriate, financial support from the Board. Where possible, these shall include an annual reunion for alumni at Oxford and/or other major centres.

5.  The Alumni Group Network. The University Alumni Office authorises and supports a network of alumni groups world-wide, providing a local focus for alumni activities. These shall be deemed local representatives of the alumni community and the Board shall advise on support and encouragement for their volunteer committees.

6.  Board Business.  

a.  The Board shall usually meet in January, May and September each year. The Chair may convene other meetings as required. The agenda for meetings shall be set by the Chair in consultation with the Director of Alumni Relations, the Treasurer and the Vice-Chair, having invited suggestions from other Board members.

b.  The Director of Alumni Relations will nominate a member of the Alumni Office to act as secretary to the Board and to maintain records of Board appointments.

7.  Alumni Relations Strategy. In exercising its responsibility under University Regulations to “advise the University on matters pertaining to alumni relations”, the Board shall annually invite the Director of Alumni Relations to make a presentation on alumni relations strategy and planned activities, normally at the May Board meeting. The Board shall offer comment or advice as appropriate and may on occasion report its views to the Vice-Chancellor, through the Pro-Vice- Chancellor (Development and External Affairs).

8. Membership of the Alumni Community and Alumni status. The Board shall advise the Committee for Development and Alumni Relations on the categories of individuals who shall be treated as members of the Alumni Community, or as having Alumni versus Associate status. These categories are listed in the schedule to these Standing Orders.

9.  Financial Governance. The Board shall meet annually, normally at its January meeting, to approve accounts for the previous year and agree a budget for the use of the funds at its disposal in the forthcoming year.
